Teaching math is AWESOME! Learning Math is AMAZING! Engaging in a profession that affords me the opportunity to influence both the teaching and the learning of mathematics is SUPERB!
I have been teaching secondary mathematics since 1999. It has been my pleasure to teach at American Fork Junior High School for the majority of this time. I believe and have witnessed that each and every student can learn mathematics at high levels. I am willing and eager for all students to have access to and engage in doing meaningful mathematical work.
In my classroom we engage in mathematical tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving. Students have multiple opportunities to collaborate with one another and to share ideas. My goal is for them to truly experience meaningful mathematics as active participants of the work, striving to reach high standards and achieve fluency with both conceptual understanding and procedural skill. I value student ideas and elicit student thinking as a means from which rich discourse and attainment of important mathematical goals can be realized.
It is important for all of us to be life-long learners and I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to engage in and provide continued learning experiences. Some of the learning experiences I have participated in include:
I also feel that it is important for each of us to look outward and connect with others as we all work to improve. For this reason I desire to be involved in and to contribute to the mathematics education community.
